Rosie’s inner change throughout the course of the book is evident and seen by all she encounters as well as herself. She filled a leadership role that was needed for Mills to build rapport with the community. When Rosie attended the first meeting with Dr. Mills she was not interested in what he had to say. However, when the next meeting was to take place the following week and Rosie did not show up, Mills went out of his way to check up on her and see why she was not there. She tried time and time again to push them man aside, as her mind was set on simply getting a job, paying the bills, and taking care of her children. This was not the change that Dr. Mills seemed to be offering at his class, therefore Rosie was not interested in what he had to offer. Due to Dr. Mills’ continual concern and care for her to come to his class and hear what he had to share she began to turn around and listen to what he was saying.
