The following paragraphs critique the syllogism and conclusions of James Heaton's article “What is the Brand of New York? (Historic House Museums)”. Heaton suggests that the brand and history of a city, as well as, history of its museums and the way these are connected are fundamental factors for the evolution and success of any museum. Concurrently, Heaton explains how the factors mentioned above affect historic house museums today by giving an example of the Morris-Jumel Mansion, a historic house museum located in New York city that is trying hard to survive. For my essay I met with Peter Alter, a historian and the archivist at the Chicago History Museum (CHM) since 2010. Peter was exceptionally helpful and patient in answering all of my questions. The archives at the CHM house many important collections relating to life in the Chicago region that go back as far as 1683. Having used their research center, I have always been impressed at how user-friendly their searchable database is, and how quickly they are able to locate the folders requested by scholars. Considering how unwieldy the huge nature of the documentation they house must be, I was excited to meet with Peter and learn about their processing approaches.…

Every person in life will have things that make them struggle, these conflicts are what define us as people, make us stronger, and move us forward in life. These conflicts aren’t only exclusive to real life, they exist in stories, and they can change how the character thinks and acts and also how we, the readers, view these characters. The conflicts that I’m referring to in this are the main characters in the stories “At the Pitt Rivers” written by Penelope Lively and “A Sunrise at the Veld” written by Doris Lessing. “At the Pitt Rivers” is about a boy that thinks love is one dimensional and has no real meaning other than attractive (pretty) people being together. “A Sunrise at the Veld” is about a young man that doesn’t quite understand…

Traditionally, museums are considered secular sites in which curators display art objectively; however, in her work, “The art museum as ritual,” Carol Duncan examines how museums act as powerful entities which influence the visitors’ perception through the display, organization, and architecture of the space. She elaborates that the museum’s authority actually enables them to represent and define entire communities, which consequently shapes the visitors’ perceptions of said communities. Perhaps Duncan’s claim is best summarized as: “To control a museum means precisely to control the representations of a community and its highest values and truths… What we see and do not see in … museums and on what terms and by whose authority we do or do…
