Book Report: Inside the Vicious Heart
One quote I found that really grabbed my attention was, “It was though we had penetrated at last to the center of the black, to the very crawling inside of the vicious heart. I had found this interesting because it really sums up the entire book in a few lines. It shows how the American’s felt toward the Nazi’s and the horrible acts they did. It also explains how the Nazi’s were viewed as “heartless” or that they truly had “vicious hearts”. Throughout the book there are many essential facts about the Americans and what they discovered upon liberating the camps. Some of the main camps include, Nordhausen, Dachau, Flossenburg and many more.

On May 5th the Americans encountered one of the worst camps, Mauthausen, also known as the “mother” camp. Mauthausen shared like the others, medical experiments, extermination, torture and many other atrocities. What made it stand out from the other camps is that is contained a quarry. Slave laborers in the quarry had a life expectancy of 6 weeks to 3 months. The prisoners were forced to carry large granite stones up 186 steep and narrow steps that connected to the camp. The SS at the camp forced many Jews to jump off the high quarry wall. One example, an officer told an Italian Jew who had a beautiful voice to sand on a rock and sing “Ave Maria”, as he stood there were charges put around the stone and mid song he was blasted away. Mauthausen was also a known camp to use its gas chambers regularly. It is estimated that nearly 10,000 prisoners were killed in these gas chambers. To conclude the camp of Mauthausen was estimated to have about 55,000 out of 185,000
