“Ethnography literally means 'a portrait of people.' An ethnography is a written description of a particular culture - the customs, beliefs, and behaviour - based on information collected through fieldwork.” - Marvin Harris and Orna Johnson (2000) Introduction An ethnography is a form of research that brings insight to specific issues that would be hard to understand as an outsider looking into a certain culture.…
As an international college student who grew up in a society where cocaine, crack, and other similar drug are almost unattainable, I was impressed by Dee Watkins’ book, The Cook Up, A Crack Memoir, and had a glimpse of how underrepresented people lived in drug society. The society that I lived in give me a safe and non-violent environment that is so much different from Watkins’. Watkins was born in an society where drugs abuses, people dying on street were fairly common. In his memoir, he majorly narrated his life at the age around 20, and how he stepped into the illegal drug business, and then how he pulled himself out of the business. He cooked crack and sold them to his neighbor, and hired crews for selling the drug for him as well.…
The ethnography that I chose is the The Hopi Way by Laura Thompson. This book discusses the way of life of the only surviving group of the desert dwellers, the Hopi. I will give an overview of the Hopi’s environment, political and social organization, the journey from birth to death, the resources used during this time, and how they made a living. I chose this book because I have family living in northern Arizona and I think that the translation of the word Hopi which means the peaceful people is beautiful. I also decided to pick the Hopi because they are one of the oldest living cultures in the world today and learning about how their culture survived when others didn’t is captivating.…
To begin examining social problems in the early twentieth-century, sociologists often used newer qualitative research methods such as ethnographies, long interviews and content analysis. They also used stats, maps, and occupation studies. These methods were all used to study social problems, such as, crime, mortality, and sin. W.E.B. DuBois and Jane Addams were very influential individuals when it came to including more qualitative forms of research into studies. W.E.B. DuBois is best known for his major contribution to sociology of examining non-white individuals in a non-racist way for the first time in history, in the large city of Philadelphia.…

The Real Latino Life of the Ghetto Although the stories Diaz’s are fictionalized the experiences and circumstances he writes about are authentic. Latinos in neighborhoods all over the world experience the hardships and struggles that Diaz’s characters face in his stories. These characters, like real people are molded and impacted by the issues surrounding them. The dangers of the “mean” streets, the exposure to drugs, the everyday struggles of Latino families and the use of particular language in Diaz’s story prove the impact and authenticity of the events. Although Diaz himself may not endured all of the hardships he writes about, Latino teenagers all over the world in suburban and urban areas have and are currently experiencing circumstances…
Mexico and Drug Violence Imagine having rights you take for granted taken away. Think about not being able to live comfortable in your own neighborhood or even having the your right to stay alive. Race has played an important role in the Unites State’s history. The Harrison book talks about how important the Civil War is in understanding today’s culture. Everyone must look back at slavery and must remember to forget that they believe that slavery is wrong because people in that time period did not believe that is was wrong. Sociologist need the past to understand the future too. Segregation has caused Jim Crow Laws, and Redlining to occur which influences poverty in urban areas (Harrison).…
As we all heard about the history of Vancouver gang and the worst shooting in the Vancouver. It was all about the drug gang in the British Columbia. When it comes to Latin American gangs that operate in multiple countries, many people may think of gangs such as the MS-13 or the Latin Kings. However, there is another gang that is just as violent and large as the ones that I have mentioned above, and they are known as the 18th Street Gang, or Barrio 18. As for colors, they wear blue, and as for symbols, they use the number 18, or they occasionally spell the number out using Roman numerals. We see traces of the gang originating as far back as the 1950’s, in Los Angeles, California, but the first official sightings of the gang are seen in the 1980’s in the same location, and gained attention in the Rodney King Riots that occurred in 1992.…
For this past week, I was able to take in what I observed and explain it through an ethnographic method. These observations opened my eyes through Sociology and gave me a better sociological perspective on our world today. Before this course, I always had that beginner’s mind in the way I saw society. As I made the effort to get a closer look, I was astonished on the outlook of our world today.…
Since the late 19th century and 20th century, Anthropology has become a growing human science. It is the understanding of human experiences and social evolution that captivate the students of this science. As the field of Anthropology becomes increasingly studied, the tactics and methods of studying groups of people have changed to truly captivate their cultures. During the early 20th century, anthropologist Franz Boas created the term cultural relativity which was defined as, every culture and society must be understood on its own terms, not that of outsiders. This means that as an anthropologist, to truly study a society, immersing yourself with no biased thought and an open mind are the most important aspects.…
