The readings in this class were quite interesting and made me view different situations from someone else’s perspective. With all the books and stories we were responsible for this class, I connected to three wonderful stories for two particular reasons. As a young doctor, and doctor in general, there will be times when you develop a strong attachment towards a patient that may affect you mentally or a patient comes in with symptoms that are not recognizable. When I become a doctor, I always worried how I would react under pressure and whether I would become too emotionally attached to my patient; that is why I connected to The Scalpel and the Silver Bear, From the Heart and My Own Country, short stories from the book A Life in Medicine. These…
Mardy Morales ED-LLC 200 Reflection 6 Belma Sadikovic Reflection 6 Every chapter we read from the book makes me think deeper. This book has valuable information that we are able to put into practice as we become a multicultural educator. I gain valuable knowledge every chapter we read and makes me think deeper and ask questions that are being answered as we have the reading discussions in class.…
The first time I saw this book online I thought it was a story about housewives and their kids, but i was mistaken. The Wicked Wives by Gus Pelagatti is a historical fiction novel based on a true story that happened in the late 1930's. The author first heard of these crimes as soon as he was eight years and overheard his mother gossiping about it. He had a career as an attorney, after which he started his writing career, focusing on writing fictionalized account of notorious crimes that made history.…
Native American Myths have been used for hundreds of years to pass stories and traditions along to different generations. Throughout these stories, there are themes found. Whether these themes are well known or if you need to dig deep into the story to find it, they help convey the message being portrayed. The themes in the myths relate to now a day cultures and remind us how similar we are to the Native Americans. Coyote and the Buffalo, The World on the Turtle's Back, and Brother Bear are stories where themes can be found.…
These stories highlight some of the most important issues of the current era, both in different ways. In Eisenberg’s book The Carnivore Way, a more modern take on the current state of the ecological system. Eisenberg presents lots of logical facts and scientific statistics that are used to prove her point. In the other spectrum, Faulkner’s Big Woods collection tells a more narrative approach to telling the reader. He uses fictional characters to invoke emotions from the readers and insight his own messages to the reader, all while keeping the messages ambiguous to the reader.…
Bone Gap by Laura Ruby is a fantasy book about perspective. A main topic in the book is the difference between looking and seeing. It includes imagery of fantasy, different views of self-image, and the heavy burden that beauty can be and the detrimental ways we look at and treat women. It can be dreadfully tense and there is this feeling of anxiety that runs throughout the novel. The book is romantic when it needed, empowering where it counts, and is simply beautiful in its telling.…
The story I am sharing is called Algonquin, meaning brother. The story comes from the Algonquin’s, the original natives of eastern Ontario and southern Quebec, Canada. In this day in age the Algonquin’s live on reserves where the land belongs to the tribe and is under their control, in nine communities located in Quebec with one in Ontario. The Algonquin’s speak their native language and some also speak English or French. Storytelling is very important to the Algonquin culture, with the existence of many traditional Algonquin legends and fairy tales.…
Analysis of When Grizzlies Walked Upright When Grizzlies walked upright is a legend from the Modoc tribe retold by Richard Erdoes and Alfonzo Ortiz. The theme of the Story: Beliefs shape Behaviors. I believe this story supports the theme by showing that the beliefs the people had shaped the way they lived.…
The Role of Myths in My Life As long as America has been a country, myths have been told. From the United States to Europe and beyond, many myths are a part of culture everywhere. Myths are the ultimate “gather round’ the campfire” type of stories, the kind a grandfather would grab the attention of his grandson with. Some are good, some are bad, some are scary and some are joyful,…
Jarriett Hicks Response 1 The Creation Accounts were pretty interesting to read, since I have never read any creation stories besides Genesis. Seneca and Thanksgiving Address are really intriguing as I question the authenticity of the many creation stories worldwide. Are all the stories created based off of one person’s assumption and passed on for centuries? Where is the truth? Despite my epistemological questions, I can say that Thanksgiving Address appears to be the most logical of all stories because of its rhetoric “Now our minds are one” creates a sense of awareness for all cultures, societies and beliefs.…
In the book Hidden Roots, by Joseph Bruchac, an 11-year old boy named Howard, also known as Sonny, lives with his mother and short tempered father in upstate New York. His father works at the local paper mill but is injured and must stay home. His mother stays at home and works around the house. Sonny is a curious boy who always wonders about his heritage but his parents never really tell him much. The plot is not revealed until the end of the book where Sonny’s Uncle Louis, tells him about his heritage and that he is actually his grandfather.…
From our interpretation of the fictional short story "One Good Story, That One" by Thomas King, it suggests parody of the religious account of The Garden of Eden (i.e. Adam and Eve). We, as a group, came to the consensus that King seemingly writes from the perspective of a stereotypical Indigenous person who is recounting the story to the best of his ability. Looking at this piece of literature from an educational perspective, it offers an opportunity for students to critically examine the intention behind what is being presented throughout the story. As a group, we decided that this story would be most effective for students to examine in secondary grades. With elementary grade level students, they may have not yet received enough education to have creditable knowledge to draw from when examining this rhetorical piece of literate and, as such, might interpret this differently than King has intended.…
In his essay “Don’t Blame the Eater” David Zinczenko brings to our attention that today’s kids are in trouble. In fact their trouble is the ongoing obesity epidemic. Zinczenko brings to light that American children are becoming more obese due to their lack of education about fast food. In studies that Zinczenko found, diabetes generally affected 5 percent of children before 1994. He adds that today’s studies, by the National Institutes of Health, show that type 2 diabetes now accounts for 30 percent of these cases.…
The theme of death is evident in countless works of literature. Kazuo Ishiguro develops this theme in his short story, “A Family Supper” in a unique and effective way. " A Family Supper" foreshadows by informing the reader that there is a possibility of another death occurring in addition to the death of the narrator’s mother. Ishiguro alludes to this theme by explaining in detail how the consumption of Fugu fish can be fatal and how prominent death is in the life of the narrator’s family.…
After two lessons of learning, I have benefited much from them. I enjoyed the stories of Cathedral and Hills like White Elephant. The narrative structures of these two stories are very different, but they all have one thing in common, which is their fascinating ways of expression to create conflicts and tensions. In the masterpiece of Cathedral by Raymond Carver, the narrative style along with the well constructed architect of the story and theme combines together to form an excellent story. Cathedral has a first person narrative style, the first person narrator tells the story in fragments of sentences, often short and simple, like “This blind man, an old friend of my wife 's, he was on his way to spend the night.…
