Ichthyosis can be a genetic disease or an acquired disease. It is genetically caused by a mutation within the genes that keep the skin protected and moist. The affected genes also affect how fast or slow the skin cells shed and multiply. Unlike those who get Ichthyosis genetically, the cause of those who acquire it is unknown. According to (Gardner, 2016) the risks caused by this disease include “dehydration, infection, overheating, slow hair growth, faster burning of calories, vision loss , depression, and brain and nervous system problems”. Symptoms of Ichthyosis are dry, scaly skin that only forms on certain areas of the body like the stomach, buttocks, legs, face, and scalp. The scales that form on the skin can have different characteristics.
