III. Gugliemites and their Beliefs: “He heard from sister Maifreda di Pirovano and Andrea Saramita,” recalls Francesco da Garbagnate, “that while Guglielma – who was buried in the monastery of Chiaravalle – was alive she said to them that from the year 1262 the body of Christ had not been sacrificed nor consecrated alone, but with the body of the Holy Spirit, which was Guglielma herself.” Whether she meant that she was in fact the incarnation of the Holy Spirit is not easy to ascertain. However, it is clear, that to her followers this would have inspired a very literal meaning. Guglielma’s followers believed that she was the incarnation of the Holy Spirit. Moreover, they believed that upon her death she would soon resurrect and usher in a new age for the Church. Mirano da Garbagnate, a Guglielmite, testified that he heard from Adelina, “that Maifreda, or Saint Guglielma, had more grace, virtue and authority on earth than blessed Peter the apostle ever possessed.” In this way, she was no only the female equivalent to Peter, but also superior to Peter. Moreover, this blended the two figures, Maifreda and Guglielma, together. Janine Peterson shows how the Guglielmites blurred the two, Maifreda and Guglielma, together. Throughout medieval times, variables such as wealth, gender roles and the growing concern of witchcraft challenged the authority of the Church. Because each of these themes are unique to their circumstances and elicited different if not similar responses from both those involved and those observing, it is relevant to detect and understand why these different events took place, and what became of the people who drove these actions. In chapters four, five and six of Deane’s A History of Medieval Heresy and Inquisition, each of these themes respectively was discussed in detail. The first of the previously mentioned concepts that challenged the authority of the Church is wealth. This was problematic as a good Christian was thought to have few worldly possessions and pride, however once in power, the men of the church had an abundance of these.…

“The Privilege of Poverty” is Joan Mueller’s attempt to reincorporate the women of the Franciscan Order and the role they played during their medieval time back into the early Franciscan history that is often written without any mention of them. Joan Mueller seeks to correct that problematic gap, lacking women’s voices and experiences, in the historiography of the early Franciscan movement. To accomplish this goal, she focuses on the history of the Franciscan Rule of St. Clare which was finally approved in 1253, only two days before she died. The encompassing theme of the book is the insistence on the “Privilege of Poverty” by Clare of Assisi and the women of St. Francis that was finally granted to them one day before with Clare's death…

Martyrdom has been cited as a “form of total love for God” (Pope Benedict XVI). In a time when Christians were being persecuted for their worship of God, or more specifically a refusal to worship the emperor, martyrdom was practically an honor bestowed upon unrepentant Christians. The Martyrdom of Sts. Perpetua and Felicitas is a rare first-hand account of sacrifice in its truest form. Perpetua writes of her numerous visions and encounters while mentally preparing herself for the death of a martyr at the hands of the pagans.…
