Danforth’s Trial The Crucible,a play, written by Arthur Miller tells the story of the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. This calamity started when a group of girls started dancing in the woods. When the town found out about this and made a whole conspiracy that it was witchcraft. Around one hundred accusations later, there were twenty-seven people hanged and many more behind bars. Although there are many characters that are culpable for The Salem Witch Trials, Danforth’s powerful position in the town has made him Arrogant and he now has more pride due to his high reputation.

He ignores others opinions and only follows his own.When Proctor is talking to Danforth about the girls and how they are manipulating him Danforth does not agree and exclaims “ I have seen them stuck by pins and slashed by daggers. I have until this moment not the slightest reason to suspect that the children may be deceiving me. Do you understand my meaning?”(Act Three lines 190-192)..When Danforth says this, he makes it seem like he does not care about what Proctor says and only cares about his own opinion. His Arrogance has made others suffer for no reason whatsoever other than the fact that he thinks that his opinion is the only thing that matters in his court. He is afraid that if he does this, his reputation throughout the town. People would not respect him if he had made the mistake of being manipulated by the girls into killing innocent people. People would retaliate if they knew what happened. When they were trying to get John Proctor to confess Parris points out that the people that were accused have very high importance in the town meaning they have a good reputation.Danforth’s response was “I cannot part on these when they are already hanged for the same crime.(Act four lines 246-248) Danforth then tries to get Proctor to confess, but in order to show people what danforth really is, Proctor has to make a sacrifice to show that all he cares about is his own reputation.
