Summary Of Hirsch's Article 'Don' T Blame The Teachers

Decent Essays
In the article Don’t Blame the Teachers by E.D Hirsch Jr. he demonstrates how teachers get blamed for how well students do in their class. Teachers all of the United States are being scapegoated for the failure of students in their classes. Is it even the teachers fault? Teachers have to follow the curriculum. They have to complete a certain amount before the end of the year. When students do poorly on tests they try to blame it on the teachers, but most students either do not study or do not understand the content. “Teacher quality affects student learning more than any other school-based variable.”
I do not agree with that quote at all because it is not always the teachers fault. When students mess around in class and do not pay attention,

In the news article, New York’s Bad Teachers, Back on the Job, Marc Sternberg authenticates his credibility by making reasonable claims and backing them up. Sternberg claims “Forcing hundreds of these [unmotivated] teachers upon schools this fall... will weaken school accountability, damage staff morale... and undermine the educational gains students have been making...” This assertion is supported by personal experience and statistics gathered during his time as the founding principal of Bronx Lab School. Sternberg recalled that “by 2008, 86 percent of Bronx Lab students graduated with more than 350 college acceptances and $2.5 million in financial aid in hand” thanks to the dedicated teachers he hired. Not only does this convinces the reader…

I thought the documentary “Waiting for Superman” was informative and also sad. Informative because we get a real idea about how schools are In the inner cities, and also how poor test scores are and how horribly we rank as a nation regarding school. Also, the method of “Tracking” which prior to this documentary I have never heard before, nor have I heard from the track being scores of obedience and appearance of neatness? What does that even mean? It also goes into how it’s nearly impossible to fire any teacher because of poor test scores from their students, which I think is really unfair.…

Rebecca Klein’s article titled “Proof you Shouldn’t Blame Teachers for the Achievement Gap” is an article that caught my eye from the title. I could not agree more that blame needs to be somewhere rather than on teachers. According to the article, Klien states that the education the different subgroups receive is the same no matter what the situation. Studies are discussed and the conclusion is reached that the achievement gap that we are facing in education in the United States cannot be directly affected to the teachers.…

When schools are failing and students aren’t learning, who is held for responsible? The answer to this question is more likely point toward one answer: teachers. Teachers have long since become the scapegoat or pawn for their students’ performance. Many debaters like Anne Perrin, author of the essay “Stop Blaming Teachers (2008),” argues that the society blame teachers for our nation’s educational shortcoming instead of the “real culprits” (87). I found her essay to be very strong as she uses ethos, pathos, and logos to support her claims as well as use humor to connect with her audience.…

Many people assume that this is strictly the student’s fault, others might suppose it to be the teacher’s fault. While it is true that there can and sometimes is an issue on an individual’s level either student or teacher, it does not necessarily follow that individuals are the primary cause of the problem in public schools. The schooling…

Out of the other chapters in Bell Hooks’ book, I felt this chapter was the most relevant to me. Hooks talked about the need for educators to engage in their teaching. Some professors and teachers do not engage and show much interest in what they are teaching. Hooks was able to describe the lack of engagement that teachers show without many examples or controversial subject material. I felt the chapter was able to relate to everyone rather than make a politically charged statement and expect people to reform to her ideals.…

Both the student and teacher are at fault in situations as such. Students should be respecting the teacher’s lesson plans and the teachers should be enforcing those plans and not allowing students to make the decisions. First, students often times fail because they receive no support from the school. Many times the teacher needs to give the students extra help or advice and the teacher doesn't won’t them that, or at least not enough help. Now some competitors may say that the teacher is always doing the best they can or that the student just needs to speak up and ask the teacher for help which may be true. The thing is that most of the time kids try their hardest and are still failing which the teacher clearly sees so then the teacher should be the one to take control of the problem. If they don't then what makes the teacher any more innocent.…

    • “You cannot fully understand how a child is functioning at school without considering the family.” (Pg.35) I pulled out this quote because I feel that as teachers this is especially important to remember when dealing with a student who has classroom behavioral issues. It is easy to automatically judge a student like this, thinking they are just a bad student. In reality most of the time the reason this child is acting out is because of some sort of situation like at home. • “The family worldview is the lens through which the family sees the world.”…

In society today, many students are out of sorts when it comes to the education system. The reason for this is since “The Role of the Teacher” written by Irving Layton outlines how everybody always places the blame on the teachers, and that is one of the major reasons why students do so poorly in school is due to the poor judgements made from the school board. By examining Irving Laytons’ use of similies, this becomes clear numerous times throughout the essay. Today, teachers are blamed for the usage of technology instead of books.…
