Hatchet, by author Gary Paulsen, is a fictional story of a 13 year old boy named Brian who must survive on his own in the Canadian wilderness with nothing but the hatchet that his mother gave him. The book is full of surprises as Brian quickly learns what he has to do in order to stay alive in the wilderness. Brian is on his way to see his dad who is getting divorced from his mother. Brian is troubled by a secret he is keeping about his mom. He saw her kissing a man. He is feeling sorry for himself because of his parents’ divorce.
