In Song of the Hummingbird by Gracie Limon, a character named Father Benito finds himself incapable of being an “instrument” of god when a woman well into her twenty’s comes forth to confess her past sins. Father Benito emotions during the first two chapters burst forth, leaving him resenting his decisions more and more. To Father Benito, this story has many layers and with every chapter, the sin begins to thicken. In chapter one he finds himself incapable of speaking to hummingbird, afraid that what he may say would not be the words of the lord. By chapter twos telling of the story, Limon, shows this by repeatedly saying “He was hunched over and said nothing for a long time”, Father Benito seems to be bordering insanity not being able to read
