Although each of the four of the individuals featured in the book Gig: Americans Talk About Their Jobs experienced distinct circumstances, each of them shared the similar value that work yields success. It was through each of their perspectives and attitudes towards this belief that distinguished their stories from one another. Both Javier Lopez and Mike Jackson detested their current jobs yet remained ambitious and hopeful to obtain success. While Michelle Passoff and Rose Collins have worked in jobs they deem undesirable and feel that they are now in a position in their careers that they consider success. Lopez hopes to achieve wealth, Jackson aspires to have a job he could enjoy, Collins finds her career exhilarating, and Passoff appreciates the gratification she receives from her career. It seems as if to help someone she must inconvenience others. Although, I do agree with her attitude toward her career in the sense that it has always given her excitement. From reading all four of the individual stories, I agree most with Michelle Passoff’s perspective towards success because she earned a job that she enjoys that involves service to

In his book “Code of the Street”, Elijah Anderson presents the term oppositional culture. In the final chapter and conclusion, Anderson shares the story of two men, John Turner and Robert, both raised and affected by oppositional culture. In this essay I will compare and contrast the ways in which Anderson uses the men to illustrate this concept, and explain their life trajectories. I will prove that while John Turner and Robert show examples of oppositional culture in the path of their lives, the two eventually differ at the conclusion of their encounters with Anderson. To prove this, I will begin by defining oppositional culture and its relation to African American culture.…

The American Dream is based on hard work and integrity, but I challenge the idea that the American Dream is still possible today because of the unlawful decisions that are becoming more and more popular because of the oppression that the leaders posses. Success is a relative term. Some people measure success by how many commas are in a bank account and size of house a person owns; some measure success by the amount of obstacles a person has overcome and still stands tall and strong. Using the second definition, a person can become successful with a reason to continue fighting and a group of people who will help them fight through adversity.
