From the Growing Seasons In "From the Growing Seasons" by Samuel Hynes, the author used good writing by using descriptive and relatable language. After the kid wakes up, he hears fireworks. The narrator speaks, "I wake up in the half dark before dawn to the sound of the day's first explosions, a distant rattling stutter; somewhere, in the far off backyards other kids can't wait" (Hynes 245). This is relatable because as kids, they can not wait for the fireworks to come on the Fourth of July. In Barbara Kingsolver’s “The Bean Trees,” chapter one is titled, “the one to get away”, to show that Taylor was successful in growing up right so that she could leave. Throughout the chapter, Taylor is contrasted from the Hardbines, who were bound to their places by multiple factors like marriage and children. Taylor ends up working at the hospital, which is one of the most important facilities in her town, meanwhile, the Hardbines are doing the opposite, that being creating work for those at the hospital. The children’s book Chrysanthemum written by Kevin Henkes is a classic piece of literature with an essential meaning within. Using the simple moral of the Golden Rule, Henkes shows this through the adventures of a mouse in a very social oriented time in children’s lives, pre-school. By using realistic fiction to depict a normal child’s experience through school, Henkes shows the ups and downs of having differences through the 13 letter name of the protagonist, Chrysanthemum. Even though the vocabulary is simple for matured ones, it is a new world for young ones using words such as “blushed” and others such as “bloomed” when used as a feeling. The book Chrysanthemum begins with Chrysanthemum growing up with love and affection from her parents.…

The book Hemlock is a romance, mystery fiction book written by Kathleen Peacock that revolves around a high schooler named Mac and how her life was turned upside down due to her best friend, Amy's death. The reason I chose this book is when I first read the blurb, the plot caught my attention. Also, the genre of this book falls under the type of books I like. In the beginning of the book, when I discovered that the cause of a charming and wealthy teenager's death was due to an infamous white werewolf and her best friend and boyfriend ditching her; I was flabbergasted. I was wondering why would she walk the streets alone in the middle of the night when she knows there has been a serial killing involving a certain white werewolf.…

It influences every waking moment of our day, from breakfast to a midnight snack; food is life. The same dependence transfers into the food industry, who have the same power over us, if not more. Shortly after President Bush’s farm bill in 2002, the New York Times published Michael Pollan’s article, “When a Crop Becomes King” which depicts a harsh reality of how the food industry, specifically the corn production, has taken over American politics, health, and the environment. In Michael Pollan’s “When a Crop Becomes King”, Pollan effectively argues that corn production has managed to take control of American society with strong imagery, credible facts, and suitable personifications. In his initial paragraphs, Pollan sets the stage for his argument through the use of imagery.…
