Summary Of Freedom By Anne Moody

I believe that Anne Moody’s main point in this second section of the book is that you got to stand up and almost die for what you believe in if you want to see change but sometimes even that’s not enough and sometimes you have to wonder what is enough and if the world will ever change. Today, this is still true people still write songs about how the world could and needs to be better. Even though now African Americans can vote and we even have had an African-American president things are still not perfect and the world is definitely still not equal.
The first thing I observed especially during the Movement section was how Annie kept mentioning how she was losing weight drastically and never seemed to have enough to eat. This struck me how

I noticed especially once she got to Madison county, Canton, Mississippi, her group and the African Americans in her community’s lives seemed to be in danger every other day. Especially after they would stage a protest or seem to have a lot of active members.
It was interesting to note how many of the African American children in Annie’s community would be unable to go to school because they could not afford new school clothes. It is sad to see how when their parents could not get jobs due to the discrimination against African Americans at that time led to their children not being able to get an education because of this. This makes a chain effect that without someone stepping in or some change of some sort to this situation would never be rectified and African Americans would forever be at a disadvantage.
I loved this reading and the courageousness of Annie especially in the last part of the book. Through her college years, she showed bravery towards the cook, women’s basketball coach, and president at her first college, but it was not until she joined the Civil Rights movement did I see how truly strong of a woman she

“No suspicious looking white people are reported” (8) I really liked this quote because it can reflect on what is going on right now in our society, if someone of white skin commits a crime the news will automatically put him in a good spot by saying things like “he was a good boy” and put a picture of him feeding a dog , but if a person of color commits a crime you see his picture on the news with him holding a rifle or with a bunch of money by his side. Here she expresses the prejudice the system has that any people of color are suspects and up to no good. “The world, in spite of oppression, is a beautiful place.” (17) I think when she said this quote she was overwhelmed by the sight of her family and the kindness she received sometimes form the nureses.…

As one could expect, white culture and white supremacy was definitely reflected in pop culture. People of color were seen as inferior and that’s the way the media wanted to keep it. Groups that would give people of color a voice, such as the NAACP and CORE were demonized in the media, further severing African Americans’ chances at achieving full citizenship. Anne Moody worked to change this, chipping away slowly at the boulder that blocked citizenship for black people. One of the most famous demonstrations that Anne was a part of is still talked about as being so important to the citizenship of African Americans, Woolsworth’s lunch counter.…

Kaysen depicts the theme of confusion between freedom and captivity through her experience at McLean Hospital to show how one cannot be found without the other. While questioning the difference between non-conforming and being crazy, Susanna Kaysen also allows the readers to question themselves and their ideas of normality. The use of literary elements, like narrative perspective and evidence, are what make Girl, Interrupted the quality piece of literature that it undeniably is and truly impact the reader.…

The novel, Age of Innocence, by Edith Wharton is about personal freedom and how duty and society restricts humans from following what they desire. The first example is when Newland is discussing with the Countess about her wishes to get divorced to the Count and says, “Our ideas about marriage and divorce are particularly old-fashioned. Our legislation favours divorce-our social customs don’t” (50). This provides evidence for the theme because society doesn’t believe in divorce. This means that even though the Countess Olenska desires to get a divorce society does not believe that it is the proper thing to do and that she should just stay in a terrible relationship.…

McGuire’s book, At the Dark End of the Street, is defiantly not boring. Reading this book helps me better understand the role African American women had, and how it was so important. This is a book mentions not only the struggles African Americans had during the civil rights movement, but the struggles women faced specifically.
