Summary Of Fiver: A Short Story

“It was just a nightmare” was Hazel's response to Fiver’s vision about humans attacking the Sandleford Warren. Hazel did not believe what Fiver had said, but Fiver, the younger, more loyal member of the Sandleford Warren, could not obliviate the thought. Fiver, in fear responded, “ Oh, Hazel! This is where it comes from! I know now- something very bad! Some terrible thing- coming closer and closer.” Hazel had to drag Fiver, a burden, back to the warren. Hazel, in anxiety warned the Chief who shook it off as a nightmare as well. The chief said it was nonsense and told Hazel to go back to his warren. A few Ni-Friths later, on a gloomy day, Hazel heard rustling outside by the slick hill. Hazel was alarmed as the thought of Fiver’s vision flashed through his mind, as a sizzling sound came. Hazel alerted everyone, warning them that someone was outside, trying to harm them. This had been a deadly mistake- the flicker to the unfortunate destruction of the warren, caused by the rabbits’ unease to be aware of every danger and elil. As every rabbit went out to investigate, only to have Hazel and Bigwig shot by humans. Consequently, Blackberry, Holly, and Bluebell went to attack the humans. While Bigwig and Hazel lay motionless, Fiver ran away. Blueberry, Holly, and Bluebell ran back into the warren, as they promised each other they would not go back out. Meanwhile, the gas had now taken effect, killing Blackberry, Holly, and Bluebell slowly and painfully. Fiver, the only remaining rabbit, was chased on foot by one of the humans as he was shot at several times, with one hitting him in the foot. He continued to run to the river that laid ahead. Once he lost the human, he ran back to the Sandleford Warren. He saw the body of every rabbit of his warren lifeless until he thought he saw Hazel’s leg twitch.
