In the play Fences by August Wilson, the reader is presented the meaning and significance of the title, Fences. Though there is only one physical fence in the play, the title uses the plural form to convey the many fences that are presented literally or figuratively throughout the story. These "fences" create many types of barriers in the play, barriers that create a severance between father and son, husband and wife, and even death and life.
