In the text, Pollan compares our processed food and obesity issues with the national drinking splurge of the 19th century. All other differences aside, Pollan focuses on the cause: "American farmers were producing far too much corn.” Just like today, the only thing to do with all the extra and cheap corn was to process it. But the Alcoholic Republic has long since given way to the Republic of Fat. According to the Surgeon General, fat is actually a certified epidemic.
The corn accounts for most of the surplus calories we eat; therefore, much of it in the form of high-fructose corn syrup. Americans, on average, consume 66 pounds of High Fructose Corn Syrup a year. Much of that is in soda. Since HFCS is cheaper than sugar corn refiners secured tariffs on imported sugarcane. Supersizing has also led to this problem, from McDonalds to a 21-ounce soda. Parents who work all the day long and have no time to cook at home are those who always make their children eat at fast food restaurants. Not only because the food is good tasting but most importantly because it’s extremely cheap. Before feeding their children, parents should be aware and well informed of what they are making them eat. Although they don’t have time to cook at home, they should always try to eat as healthy as possible. However, today, not even cooking at home is as healthy as it was back then. All the chemicals added to our food is what makes our health system get weaker and produces all the different types of diseases that come from obesity. Parents are a very big influence on children that is why we should all be concerned and omit to have a much healthier lifestyle. We should try to eat as little fast food as possible and keep in mind that, just because the food is cheap, it does not mean it's healthy enough for us to
