Farquhar was a member “of an old highly respected Alabama family.” (523) He was a slave owner who was devoted to the southern cause. The story tells us that he was devoted to helping the Southern Army anyway possible but, we do not know why he never joined the confederate army. One evening, a soldier in Confederate gray rides onto Farquhar’s plantation to get a drink of water. He told Farquhar that Union forces had advanced to the Owl Creek bride. (Cummings) He tells Farquhar that “The Yanks were repairing the railroad bridge”. (523) He tells Farquhar that the bridge is not guarded well and there was plenty of dry wood to start a fire and burn down the bridge.
