Summary Of Exxon Mislead Public On Climate Change

Decent Essays
The article Study concludes Exxon mislead public on climate change by Timothy Cama is about Exxon Mobil Corporation lying to the public about keeping information regarding climate change and misleading the public about their knowledge of fossil fuels harming the planet. It shows that "the largest oil company in the world" (Cama, 2017, para.12) is unsympathetic when it comes to the environment. Exxon did not want their customers to know they were aware of the harsh reality of the climate change. It seems foolish to be unaware of climate change, it is expected as an oil company to be aware of this subject. Exxon claims that the Rockefeller family is harassing them due to Rockefeller funding antagonists.

Fox News establishes their credibility by referencing to experts’ opinions, like climate scientists. For example, Doug McKelway, a Fox correspondent on The Special Report, uses the “NASA scientist turned climate activist James Hanson,” to show he “also acknowledges the lull” in the planet’s temperature rising (“Climate Change Challenged”). By using this prominent and credible climatologist, Fox News gains the public’s trust and faith in their climate change opinions. James Hanson proves that Global Warming was exaggerated, once he identifies that temperatures have flat lined and have only increased a few tenths of a degree in the past decade. Dr. Robert Carter, a marine geologist, agrees with Hanson and believes that this lull in the past decade proves that climate change is natural and not caused by humans (“House Environmental Committee”).…

Just as Klein states, “The bottom line is that we are all inclined to denial when the truth is too costly- whether emotionally intellectually, or financially”(46). Even though we all aware of the implications of our actions to the environment, we continue to repeat those actions. Some of us chose to look away, especially “political right”(Kelin 63)because they fear to change; fear to accept the consequence of climate changing. Some of us chose to deny because they lack trust to the scientist.…

The IPCC concluded that most of the warming that has been observed over the past 50 years is due to human activities and Its findings have been publicly endorsed by the national academies of science of all G-8 nations. Those who deny climate change generally do not have a background in science and do not debate with the climate scientists directly but instead fixate on the media, the general public and politicians in the hopes of delaying action climate change. The motive behind the delays is due to the fact that the majority of climate change deniers receive significant funding from coal and oil companies. In 1999, a coalition of coal and utility companies launched a disinformation campaign designed by a public relations firm to create the Information Council on the Environment (ICE), their goal was to “reposition global warming as theory rather than fact," a statement that was leaked from strategy papers developed by a polling firm used by the public relations company that managed the ICE…

In the article “Understanding Faulty thinking tackle climate change” author George Marshall explains the psychological reasons why we ignore climate change. The article presents many biases we employ which affect how important we deem an issue and prejudices on why we choose to ignore it. After throughly analyzing the article based on its content and use off logos, ethos, and pathos I have concluded that every UTA alumni would be able to make their own connection with any of the statements provide in the article. Thus I would happily recommend the article be published in UTA’s newspaper The Shorthorn. George selectively includes some logos in an effort to persuade and appeal to his readers.…
