Nicola Yoon develops the theme of love through the characters Madeline Whitter and Oliver, as they form a friendship and eventually fall in love. In the beginning of the novel they are strangers, but they soon form a friendship and as the book progresses they start to develop feelings for each other and even risk their lives for each other.
