Summary Of Enrique's 'I Love Your Daddy'

Enrique’s dilemma is deciding to stay in America with his mother or going back to Honduras to his family. Enrique decided to leave Honduras to find his mother who left him at the age of five , but he also left behind Maria who was pregnant with Jasmine in Honduras. Enrique loves his mother,” Happy New Year. I love you,” he tells his mother.(Nazario 204)” Enrique and his mother fought each other for respect, considering they did not grow up like the typical mother son. This does not change what he did in order to get to his mother and the love he has for his mother. The fact that told his mother that he loves on New years when he could have been hanging out with friends instead proves that he still truly loves his mother no matter what is in the past. These will cause Enrique to think about staying in the states with his job,mother, and addict-free life. The fact that Enrique is a father still remains,” I’m your Daddy. Do you love your Daddy?” Enrique asks.(N 224). Jasmin has never seen Enrique, because he left before she was born. This shows how desperate Enrique is to be accepted by Jasmin as her father, which is hard to do when her father has only called her and sent her things. Enrique loves Maria and wants to be with her and Jasmin so he can have his family together. He fears that the longer they are apart that they will start to grow apart and Maria will move and Jasmin will accept another man as her father. If he leaves America will apart from his mother again and might fall back into extreme poverty since Honduras does not offer as many jobs as america. He wants to build a business, but he will have to wait and save money, which stay in the States, which means less time he gets to be with Jasmin before she grows too old to truly accept her father. This pushes him to go back to Honduras.
