Can you imagine the world as a flat surface filled with a bunch of shapes? In Flatland Edwin Abbott describes the world as “a flat sheet of paper on which straight lines, triangles, squares, pentagons, hexagons, and other figures make up the space we live in today” (Abbott). This book can help teach students geometry in everyday life, and give good examples of things we would not think of as something we would learn in geometry. The book also gives us examples of how words can change their meanings thought the years, or stay the same.
In the story Edwin Abbott refers to everything as being flat, and a straight line. He uses the penny as an example. Abbott explains that “when you look at a penny you see that it is a circle, and …show more content…
He later goes on to say that “women are like needles, and when you look at them above or below all you see is a point” (Abbott). If this was the case in today’s world every girl would be happy. Unfortunately, this is not the case and pretty much everyone has curves and extra fluff in places that we do not want it. If you were to look at me from the top or bottom I can guarantee you would see more than just a point. I don’t see humans as a geometry figure, or at least in the ways Abbott does. He used triangles as an example for humans, and I do not agree with that. I see one down fall of this book, and that being where he compared women to needles. I think it would take away some confidence some students may have about their …show more content…
This story made me realize that geometry is anywhere you look. You can use a simple door in your house as an example in geometry. Shapes are everywhere so just look around, and I guarantee you will see more geometry than you realized. Flatland was hard to understand at first, but once you got into it and did some research it actually made sence. I was able to learn meanings of words I was not sure about, and it helped expand my vocabulary. Next time you are in an area with nothing around just picture the world being like that, and not being able to tell which way is North and South. While reading this many new ideas for my future classroom came to mind, and I cannot wait to try them out one
