The Underground man in Dostoevsky's Notes from Underground goes against systems to prove he has free will. To begin with these systems the Underground man claims the overall system is science, and within the system are the laws of nature and rational egoism which creates systems in general. The Underground man goes against systems in general by refusing to go see a doctor when he claims to have a liver disease, remains in Petersburg after admitting the climate is bad, and also that it is very expensive to live there. The Underground man explains why he is going against systems by saying how man is like a piano key, and the systems are the ones who control the piano key.
