Diversity in the media doesn’t simply just mean for people of color, it also means for any underrepresented group of people in America. With this decrease in negativity, it starts to enable a welcoming environment for people to feel comfortable in; thus, creating a more productive country and lifestyles for everyone. Once people start to become aware of the diversity in media, talking about certain issues that affect people of color and other underrepresented groups become much easier. This is not to stay that it’ll be a piece of cake, but it creates dialogue and talking things out sets a better tone for change. In an article posted on the Guardian, author Christopher Hodgson was talking about the benefits that come with having a diverse team to work with, “When people see themselves in a cohort or a group they are more likely to apply for the job or contribute to a project or a story. For example, from a recruitment perspective being inclusive could provide access to a wider pool of candidates, new talent, skills and lead to confident and happier staff.” Not only does having representation create positive effects in television or movies, but business as well. Another positive effect of diversity in the media is that for example, if a child sees a movie Disney’s Moana, about a young Polynesian princess from the island of Motunui and travel’s the vast ocean on a journey by herself to save her island from immense doom. This is the type of movie where there is a woman of color, being a heroine and not a damsel in distress; this creates a positive message for children of color because they finally a heroine that possibly looks like themselves. Thus this could be inspiring for them to feel more comfortable in their own skin and want to be a hero like Moana as they grow up; that boost
