The authors choice of structure impact the effectiveness of the argument being made by using inductive reasoning.
In the article “Dismantling the Poverty Trap” Gilbert used more logic than she did emotion because she didn’t wanna make her point of view to seem like a sob story. She uses a lot of facts and information to back up her claim which makes us want to think that her article was more useful. She used a lot of examples for the high school dropouts, “High school dropouts from the ages of 16 to 24 were 63 times more likely to be institutionalized (either in prisons or more rarely, in mental institutions or hospitals) than four-year college graduates.” she says She also gives examples on how we can help people get out of poverty unlike

Ah Ruby Payne. She is an interesting business woman, and hopefully, she has good intentions with her work on poverty. The reason I say hopefully is because her work is not that good, and I think it will cause more damage than fix the problems people have. Her main flaw with her work on poverty is the mindframe that she has in regards to what poverty actually means and how someone can escape or help those in poverty. So far we have discussed the flaws in regards to her plans and models, but we have not discussed the main root in the issue of what she classifies as poverty.…

United States charities that aid countries in poverty are not often helping those countries the way they should be doing so. For Example, when America gave Haiti supplies such as food, clothes and shoes they may have helped Haiti’s immediate issue but when they gave Haiti all of these things it made it difficult for businesses to sell something that could be obtained without purchase. The solution to Haiti’s lack of supplies shouldn’t be solved by dumping bulk items that ruin their market but by assisting them financially in a way to set them up for success in the future. In the documentary Poverty Inc. there was a discussion pertaining Tom’s Shoes.…

The second article I chose was, “Does Welfare Reduce Poverty?” written by George J. Borjas published in 2015. As most have already learned in class, the news, or my previous explanation of the article above, welfare-programs ordinarily help decrease the poverty rates in most families, nonetheless this is not always the case. In this article Borjas’ objective is to determine the link between immigrant families and poverty rates. Borjas states that, “the huge changes in eligibility introduced by the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 (PRWORA) provide a great deal of exogenous variation that could, in principle, help address this important question of the impact of welfare on poverty (Borjas 143).” Therefore,…

Michelle Singletary main idea in her article “The next face of poverty could be yours” was that poverty is not a problem that should be addressed with great ease and understanding of the person's situation. Poverty is different for each person who experiences it and should not be taking as a giving up for the person. A Lot of poor people are trying to get a job, but sometimes it just doesn’t happen for them. The story the rich man to poor man really shows how that poverty can change for the most unexpected people.…

The first step to ending child poverty would be to spread awareness of it. People do not realize how much child poverty is affecting the world. They may be too caught up on the smaller issues when this issue is easily spiraling out of control. I would spread awareness of child poverty by talking to the youth about it. They can make a difference even though they are young.…

Introduction of Topic The basic definition that the dictionary provides for poverty is “the state of being extremely poor” (CITE). Biased information defeats every purpose of an argument that a person or persons are trying to make. The article “The Importance of a Good Education” by Diane Ravitch is an article discussing the author’s biased beliefs on the No Child Left Behind bill. The information that the author gives is biased based on the way the author presents her information and that she works at a liberal college. Ravitch fails to contrast the benefit of the math and science scores due to the bill; “The long-term Nation's Report Card (NAEP) results, released in July 2005, showed elementary school student achievement in reading and math at all-time highs and the achievement gap closing” (www.2.ed.gov) She fails to analyze both sides of the argument for the “No Child…

In the United States, one of the richest countries in the world, why are so many people in poverty? According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the “official poverty rate in 2014 was 14.8 percent, which means there were 46.7 million people in poverty” (U.S. Census Bureau). Poverty is an important and emotional issue. To understand poverty in the United States, it is essential to look behind these numbers to see the actual living conditions of the individuals the government deems to be poor. The U.S. Census Bureau uses a set of guidelines to determine if families meet that poverty threshold.…

Welfare needs to stop acting on good intentions and start acting on discernment by creating a motivation to work and get out of poverty. There are two major ways to promote this strategy: to make it so that welfare is only given out with the condition that those who receive it must be in active pursuit of a job and to make it so that welfare is only given to those who become enrolled in getting some kind of education or training. For example, according to Erin Thomas, who is a social work student and had an internship at the Salvation Army Community Family Shelter, the residents could only stay in the shelter if they were actively seeking a job and applied to at least fifteen a week. Making people to first obtain a job not only makes welfare…
