Diaz’s book OW helps explain the concepts of social, sex, and gender inequalities. We are told the story of a family who lives through a variety of injustices and discrimination. Microinequities refers to ways in which people are either singled out, overlooked, ignored or otherwise discounted on the basis of unchangeable characteristics (Reading E:104). A person is discriminated for attributes that are not in their power to decide or change like race, gender, and age. Basically one is abused for the features we were born with. In contrast class structure as antagonist categories describes the classes as having clear and discrete lines (Reading A:17). According to Marx one's position and power in production determines what class you belong to which according to him are explicit. In OW Trujillo has the power to decide what and when something is done or said. Abelard “and intelligent lover of ideas” stays close to Trujillo so that he can earn his trust and stay away from his watch so that he is able to do study and research without being deprived with Trujillo's rules (Diaz:214). The capitan killing Oscar can be compared to honor killing. Honor killing is a discriminatory way of controlling women's behavior (Reading E:121). The killings were specifically done when a woman disobayed or did something sexualy unmoral. Like the women Oscar is weaker and has less power than the capitan, making him an easy kill. By the end of OW Yunior tells us of the letters sent by Oscar explaining his success with Ybon (Diaz: 333). He tells about their little vacation on how he was finally able to experience love yet he was killed for it. Oscar was disobedient to the capitan and did what he was warned not to do ending his life. Reading E explains how China suffers the most suicide incidents most of them from women. Just like the women committing suicide one can say that Oscar made himself get killed in exchange of making his dreams
