In Delirium by Lauren Oliver, Lena, a teenager, learns love is not a disease. To begin with, Lena lives in Portland where love is a disease and is considered larceny. The government gives everyone an evaluation so they can be paired with someone compatible with them and they are also given a surgical procedure to guarantee one wont love. Lena is scheduled to be cured in a couple months to come and her evaluation is just days away. In the beginning, it is the day of Lena’s evaluation and she is so nervous. Lena starts to struggle to find words to say, but cannot. Then she starts to ruin her future. While trying to muddle through her evaluation the whole thing is disrupted by a herd of cattle someone let in. Trying to avoid getting trampled Lena hides to the side, but she hears laughing. That is when a guy yells at the girls, but when they turn around Lena immediately knows who he is. He was the guy laughing at her during her evaluation. She keeps trying to ask him why he was there and ask him if he was the cause of the cattle but he continued to interrupt her every time she would speak. He introduces himself as Alex and he says he is cured. Then Alex hints for her to meet him at the beach that night. So that night Lena sneaks out, but almost gets caught by regulators.
