She discusses the lack of interest America has for the environment. She also states several solutions to reduce the carbon footprint which focuses on what Whitty calls a fossil fuel diet. Through the slightly uncomfortable imagery of a ‘beef farm’, Anderson shows us a world in which only specific parts of a cow are farmed, as opposed to the actual animal, with the occasional gory mutation such as horns or other vestigial organs. While something this drastic is unlikely in our own lifetimes, there is a definite correlation between climate change and declining food production. The predicted decreases in the production of crops such as maize, rice, and wheat are due to rising levels of carbon dioxide. These decreases would most greatly affect the underdeveloped and developing countries of the world, the people who rely on agriculture as their only source of income and/or food. This federal law aims at regulating air emissions from stationary sources such as industries and mobile sources such as vehicles. It was established to authorize the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to establish National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) that protects the public health through regulation of emissions that have a hazardous effect on air (Sueyoshi & Goto, 2010). The CAA was established in 1963 after several deaths were experienced in 1948 and 1952 due to air pollution. For the first time since before the Ice Age, carbon dioxide will not fall below 400 ppm. This measurement was taken from the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration department, who declared that we will never see carbon dioxide levels fall below 400 ppm during our lifetime and beyond that. My opinion about GMOs; I personally believe it is very bad for our environment and us as people. GMOs are chemicals in our food example: corn, potatoes, carrots, cows, chicken, fish and much more. Inspired by a forsaken orange that sat in a North Carolina parking lot, Jonathan Bloom wrote American Wasteland to examine the growing problem of food-waste in America. I think Bloom did a tremendous job by presenting this looming issue. His numerous anecdotes pertaining to food-waste creates an innate sense of relatability, which in turn direct readers’ attention to the statistical and logical presentations of the issue. This is an impressive feat because Bloom avoided coming off as preachy or judgmental in a book that attempts to raise awareness of something that general Americans have already decided it’s not important (xvi).
