Many commencement speeches are inspiring and speak to all of the graduating students that are stepping into the workforce. David Foster Wallace’s speech focused on the life ahead of the students, who will be day in and day out in days filled with boredom, harsh frustrations and the same routine of daily life. When I first read the quote, it showed a story behind the commencement speech. The quote speaks to the autopilot lives that we are living, where we are unknowingly tangled in a rat race that keep us from paying attention to what is most meaningful in our everyday lives.
I feel as though the quote has a lot more meaning than I had first realized when I read it in the beginning of the semester. I believe the quote now shows what education really means and what the real idea is about being fully aware in the world around us. In which case became relevant to the work we did during this semester. Throughout the semester we analyzed different articles, speeches, essays, and videos. Many of the videos in the semester followed real life situations. For example, UCLA Black Bruins led by Sy Stokes and a group of students, focused on the diversity concerns and showed that there was a lack of equality in the education system. Also, having to listen and follow the podcast Serial, which is based on soldier Bowe Bergdahl and a decision he made to leave his post-not only did his choice affect him but also affected the people around him. With all these different materials, it made me realize that there are real life events happening all around
