The Contestant written by Daniel Alarcon based on the true story of Ruth Thalía and her family. She attended a TV show called El Valor de la Verdad which allows the contestant to earn money based on the true answers given earlier. Tons of different ways to raise money to complete a dream including Ruth’s dream instead of working at a local hair salon she picked the show and did not felt shame or regret.
The truth played a huge role throughout the novel. From the show Beto has been known for making others answering uncomfortable cause he knew the area where Ruth was ruined and damaged. He asked Ruth if she had a dream and she wished to open a hair salon. So the family knew about the hair salon but they did not hear the real truth or reason on why their daughter decided to attend the program. Alarcon is telling us as the readers that when people want to become famous they will do anything for simple things such as money. According to Brooks “Far from being victimized by information about celebrities, we’re using it for our own positive social ends” (Brooks 74-75 para 14).
The power of the media definitely played a huge theme or role through out the book. The media was able to act in positive and negative viewpoints. The positive side, the media gave people entertainment and high ratings for producers. The negative side, is how willing people are being sucked in and share a lot of personal information to a group of audiences. Take the quote about the time Ruth’s family was very worried about finding their daughter and relied on the media at the time. The media did not pay attention to area they lived in and longed for more and more news which makes the family more and more depressed and shamed.
