These disputes go on for a while causing hatred and disrespect among the people of Salem. Putnam and Proctor are two of the main characters that dislike each other through the story. This is because John Proctor dislikes Putnam which causes Putnam to dislike Proctor even though they are both well respected people in the town. They are always arguing over whose land is whose. “Your Grandfather ad a habit of willing that never belonged to him, if I may say it plain.” (Miller 1252) Proctor says this to Putnam because he is telling Giles and Proctor to stop taking his wood or otherwise he will report them to the court and have them hanged. This is just one of many conflicts between land because then Giles chimes in saying “That’s god’s truth: he nearly willed away my north pasture but he knew I’d break his fingers before he’d set his named to it. Let’s get your lumber home.” (Miller 1252) Land disputes are tearing away friendships and relationships because Giles was helping Proctor with his wood and then Putnam tried to rid the two out of “his land”. Giles says that Putnam’s Grandfather was trying to sell or get rid of all of Giles land even though Giles didn’t approve of it. This is why we have conflict that is not being resolved and it leads to hatred among the town’s people. Another land dispute issue consists of Putnam and old man Jacobs. This happens where Jacobs has a lot of land and Putnam wants it. Putnam the sly cat that he is decides to construct a plan but not a good one. He decides to have his daughter go to the court and lie about Jacobs coming to her as a spirit and not letting her rest. The court sees this as an act of witchcraft and have Jacobs hanged. This allows Putnam to buy the land off Jacobs’s family because Jacobs was hanged. This is why when the people lie and tell fake stories of how people are coming to them, as spirits with no actual evidence to back them up
