Kids have in mind “oh yay no school let's thank Columbus” ...instead of questioning “wow a murder we are celebrating, why not celebrate the day hitler rose to power?” The voices in chapter one not only broadened my understanding but made me question how Columbus handled things and why historians leave this information out ...why do we even celebrate Columbus sailing the oceans and ‘finding America?’ After reading this chapter I began to ask my siblings if they knew Columbus and why he is so important. My youngest sister said “Columbus found AMERICA!!! And my teacher told me without him we wouldn't have a day off from school, but I don't know if she was kidding because she was laughing.” I then asked my brother who Columbus was and surprisingly he said “he's an explorer who found America and killed the savages.”
I was very shocked at what my siblings said because when I think of my days in elementary, we always categorized the Indians as ‘savages’ ...as people who talk to animals and dress weird. The voices in chapter one allowed me to know the type of man Columbus was and it helped me understand what elementary kids are taught about Columbus is inaccurate. It is an ignorant poem taught to make us believe Columbus was this heroic person. You never saw a happier
