Pruckmayr Assignment The case of Leo Wright and the murder of Bettina Pruckmayr was extremely tragic. There were so many mistakes made, from his time in the Lorton facility, to the lack of communication and time spent on his case, his arrests and his time on parole. The first red flag that I saw and felt the most frustrated about, was not only Wright’s lack of ability to show up for his monthly meetings, but the fact that his own parole officer seemed unable to attend many of these meetings as well. The lack of communication and time spent with Wright clearly kept Wright from seeing his drug addiction was back in full swing.…

These men and women come from vastly different backgrounds but share two distinct characteristics they are highly educated and overworked. In Courtroom 302, there are several major issues that are addressed concerning the law and mental health issues. Several dysfunctions that can be seen are more so concerning the law in itself and that is that jails and prisons are simply being used to house offenders and not reform them, as was the original intent. Courtroom 302 also illustrates a court system that is broken, where judges, attorneys and officers are overworked and forced to simply process cases and do not have the time to work in the interest of finding or delivering justice.…
Within the twenty-three years Milgaard spent in prison, David faced unspeakable horrors. Milgaard suffered numerous suicide attempts both inside and outside of prison, he claimed he “did not feel he could be a part of society again.” (4). Once out David turned to alcoholism and isolation, feeling that the world had all moved without him and there was no way for him to get back.…
Global Issues: Presentence Reports and Intermediate Sanctions Review of Subject Probation officers have an important role in the criminal justice system, and their supervision and investigation skills contribute greatly to the sentencing phase of an offender. One of the many tasks of a probation officer is to generate detailed presentence investigations (PSIs). In order to have a comprehensive presentence report, a probation officer must interview the offender, evaluate the offender’s criminal history along with facts of the crime he or she has committed (Clear et al., 2013). A presentence report will help a sentencing judge decide what type of punishment is appropriate for the crime that an offender has committed. There will be situations…
He also knew it needed a change, particularly the probation program. Parole is conditional release from prison, granted to inmates who have already served part of their sentence. Probation is an alternative to prison time, offered by the court during sentencing. So rather than doing hard time in a cell, the guilty party remains free - with certain stipulations. They vary by jurisdiction, but typically include paying a restitution fee, reporting to a probation officer, refraining from alcohol, being subject to drug tests and staying within geographic areas.…
However, not all criminal cases are overseen and processed in the criminal justice system in the same way, shape, or form as the criminal justice system is composed of different parts, stages, and agents each with varying differences, functions and goals. One important agent that has continually been examined in terms of roles, functions, and effectiveness is the…
Balancing the tension between community interest and individual rights and freedoms are a significant component of the criminal trial process and is relatively successful in that retrospect. In order to be effective and efficient the criminal trial process should reflect the moral and ethical standards of society, ensure the community is sufficiently protected and respects the rights of the individual. However, despite efforts to achieve justice for all members of society, the criminal trial process does fail to provide adequate success in some areas of the law such as the jury system, Legal Aid and the provocation defence. All these areas to an extent highlight the lack of success the criminal trial process serves in balancing community interests…
Throughout the years the amount of crimes leading to victim injury has risen and so has the level of victims participating in the criminal justice process. Victims have been able to share about their pain and suffering through victim impact statements, VIS, these are usually red by the victim right before sentencing. There are two points of view when it comes to VIS. Some believe that they have had a positive effect on sentencing and that they are also good for the victim’s personal wellbeing. While some others believe that the emotional reaction from the VIS has led to excessive sentencing.…
