Having arguments with your mother isn’t a rare thing, nor is living far away from her. There are many pieces of literature in which mothers and daughters don’t have the best relationship. In Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni’s book Arranged Marriage there are two stories that stood out to me with this particular theme. In both “The Word Love” and “The Maid Servant’s Story” uneasy relationships between mother and daughter cause distance and pain for both. In the story “The Word Love” the narrator is living with a man in which her foreboding mother does not know, and she does not allow the man whom she is living with to answer the phone in worry that he’ll pick up and her mother will hear a man’s voice. When her husband finds out he made a scene about it, “First of all you don’t need another servant. As it is, Ayah doesn’t have enough to do. And then, where will she stay? The servant’s quarters are full already”(121). Her husband thinks that just because the servant’s quarters are full there isn’t more room for more help, when they need it. But then the wife suggests that she could stay in the house and he says to her we don’t know who she is and what she’s capable of. When the servant, Sarala’s mother shows up on the front porch where her daughter is working she is angry and wants her daughter to come back home when she refused she left, but came back with an angry army of people, “‘We want the girl. Give us the girl.’ ‘Her mother wants her back, and so does her man. You got no right to keep her.’ ‘Up to no good we hear, you folks. Taking advantage of a young girl like that.’ ‘All you rich people, all alike, think you own the earth’”(150). If Sarala goes back to her mother and her “man” they know she is going to end up an prostitute and they won’t let that happen because if she leaves before the wife comes back from the hospital than she will sad that she left without saying goodbye and mad at her husband that he let her go back to that terrible place.
