Research has proven that poor social-economic status can predict the development and onset of obesity (Raj & Kumar, 2010). Many neighborhoods that are below the poverty threshold do not have supermarkets, outdoor produce stands, or other healthy alternatives to fast food restaurants. This creates an environment where unhealthy foods are readily affordable, available, and easy to consume with minimal preparation (Wieting, 2008). Society changes also can contribute to childhood obesity.
