In the poem of Levins, she says, “I am child of the Americas A light-skinned mestiza of the Caribbean A child of many diaspora, born into this continent at crossroads”. For example, in her poem she says “I am not African. Africa is in me, but I cannot return. I am not taína (Name eines Indianerstammes). Taíno is in me, but there is no way back. I am not European. Europe lives in me, but I have no home there.” She is using this metaphor as evidence that here in America everyone has a different culture and that’s what makes them a country. By mentioning about the Europeans she is saying how they were one of the first settlers in the Americas and how they came here looking for freedom of their own difficulties and problems from their former country.
