An Extraordinary Mentor in an Unexpected Creature What is a mentor? The word “mentor” can be defined as someone who teaches or gives help and advice to a less experience and often younger person. Most of the time, a mentor helps the person to achieve a goal, learn a lesson, or to believe in ones-self .E.B. White, the author of Charlotte’s Web perfectly In the story Charlotte’s Web, Charlotte is Wilbur’s mentor. She helps Wilbur to be the “Some Pig” that she tells him he is. She teaches him to be “Radiant” like she says he is. She helps him to strive to be “Terrific” like she says he is. Wilbur strives to be all the things Charlotte says he is. This is a good example to mentors on how to be a positive influence to the children. The positive things they tell the children can lead them to strive to be better, just like Charlotte did with Wilbur. Positivity is essential in the betterment of individual self. Mentors are rarely seen themselves and only known by the success that their pupils enjoy. One can further see the impact that mentors have in that they provide the additional push needed by the pupil to launch into the path of success. This is seen in Charlotte and Wilbur’s situation when Charlotte began to encourage and support Wilbur and push him beyond his own expectations. Without the impact of mentors in any person’s life, few would ever push themselves to achieve their full and maximum …show more content…
For example, Wilbur cares for Charlotte’s egg sac after she passes, and loves all of the baby spiders because they are of Charlotte. He continues to care for the three that choose to remain at the farm. It can be determined that White’s idea is that the children can go on to follow in their mentor’s footsteps and continue on that path by helping to mentor others. A real-world example is a student becoming a teacher because they were so influenced throughout their early life by a specific teacher who went above and beyond to instill wisdom and help better the lives of the children that were taught. In many ways, the actions of the mentor set the tone for the pupil’s future. In continuing the path of the mentor, the pupil honors the memory of their mentor and in turn this gives praise, appreciation, and respect to the
