Summary Of Censorship In Young Adult Fiction

Decent Essays
Susan Holland's article "Censorship in young adult fiction: what's out there and what should be" is an engaging article. Holland's article addresses issues on freedom, on an intellectual base. She recognizes that young adult fiction censorship relies too heavily on stereotype sensors such as religious members who are presented as dense because of their opinion. Personally, I believe that young adults have enough judgment in their lives. Reading is a phenomenal way for one to form their own opinions and to evolve as a person. Therefore, I do not believe that books should be censored. Ultimately, this paper describes the various ways parents/adults have had an effect on teenagers reading material, what more people need to realize is that children

A traveller goes to China and tries to access Youtube, but realizes that it is blocked. A more extreme form of censorship is shown in Fahrenheit 451. In this book, all forms of literature such as books were banned by the government. This caused people to become mindless drones who lacked knowledge and creativity. Bradbury had a purpose for writing this, to warn us about how censorship can be used by the government for malicious purposes; he does this using literary elements.…

I can agree with Meghan Cox Gurdon about one thing in the article, Darkness Too Visible; YA literature has become much darker than it was in 1967. So what? All of the topics she laments have taken over YA literature are certainly not new. Profanity, kidnapping etc. have been around a lot longer than 1967. Are some of these topics not appropriate for kids at age 13?…

Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 shares educated insight on the amount of censorship and political correctness in our modern society. Bradbury seems to promote anti-censorship in society throughout the novel; Bradbury explains the many reasons why books have been outlawed in the future. Though the reasoning for this prohibition on literature is never completely revealed, it is said that the amount of offense taken by minority groups helped lead to the eventual ban on all literature. Though many other factors are brought up throughout the novel, these factors can be broken up into two main groups: The factors that lead to a general disinterest in the activity of reading itself, and the factors that lead to a hostility towards literature by the…

In today’s modern world, censorship plays an important role while trying to protect our childhood innocence from the cruel and inhumane world in which we live. The everyday life of a citizen in the novels 1984 and Fahrenheit 451 were beyond censored from the outside world. For example, citizen in the novel Fahrenheit 451, citizens were kept ignorant of the war going on outside their doors in order to preserve their happiness. Likewise in 1984, their government kept its citizens ignorant to order to create a false utopia. In comparison, children in the United States are “protected” from unfortunate events and information that occurs more often than not.…

Books end up on the censored or banned list because are reported to have content that is believed to be harmful to the reader. For children’s books, many complaints are made by parents who think the content of the book could harm their child’s mind or may be an inappropriate topic to learn about. Some of the main complaints are made due to: religion, sexual orientation, political views, violence and “obscene” language. Goosebumps should not be banned because it contains no offensive language and the central character never dies, the protagonists can be both male and female, they can contain good moral lessons for children and promote family values, the books depict protagonists escaping doom with their own wit and ingenuity, and young readers love simple language and easily-followed yet engrossing plots. Goosebumps was banned primarily because it caused fear among the children.…

Young adult books should stay the way they are. The books can tend to be very graphic in nature and have things that wouldn't be considered appropriate, too real for people our age. Young adults are the intended audience for these books for a reason. They talk about real life issues like suicide in teens, alcoholism, racism, and drug use. The world is not a pretty place, these things happen.…

As you guys might have been able to tell, I love Harry Potter. Harry Potter is one of the best series ever and the author, J. K. Rowling, is the first author to ever become a billionaire off their series of books. It truly is a magical book that follows three friends, Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger, on their adventures. It is a great book to start as a third grader and read throughout grade and middle school. There are many deaths through out the series with most of them appearing in the last two books which if you really enjoyed the books and the characters, you will cry over.…

What would life be like if everything was censored? First we must know what censorship is because it plays a very important role in both the novel Fahrenheit 451 and the film Pleasantville. Censorship is the practice of officially examining books, and what is viewed either on television and so on, but when examining these a higher power is suppressing the unacceptable parts. With that being said in both the novel and film we see the censorship over literature and television shows being run by that society’s government. Since Fahrenheit 451 and Pleasantville have both books and television censored we find that it is more valuable when our protagonists who once loved their part in their new society, in fact turn against their old ways and spark a rebellion to preserve what is considered outlawed.…

Fortunately, for every group pushing for bans on literature, there are organizations that fight for this freedom. One such organization is the American Civil Liberties Union. In the year 2000, when discussing the topic of book banning, the organization stated that, “Permitting restraints on literature sets the stage for attacks on all expression that is artistically or politically controversial or that portrays unpleasant realities of life” (American Civil Liberties Union). Although some books may contain graphic violence or sexual content, and therefore of course should be kept out of the hands of children, I’d like to think that these widespread en masse bans of such literature are a poor way to go about it. It’s not as if middle or high school students are incapable of understanding and comprehending dark or more adult subject matter.…

In many ways their writing have came true, from how today’s society innovate lives through technology and constrain society with blanket of false advertising. Ray Bradbury’s and Aldous Huxley’s dystopian novels were not only meant to entice the mind with a well written plot but to open the peoples eyes by seeing through the book at the warning it tells.…
