Summary Of Cecilia Gaposchkin

Decent Essays
Cecilia Gaposchkin wrote an article over the movement of students who pick major that interest them more, rather than a practical job. Gaposchkin believes this will open students creativity and lead them to be a more analytic thinker. I agree with her argument on more of a personal level since It relates to me. I chose to be a art major, for the fact of my interest and strengths. My parents on the other hand, consider it to be an atrocious concept, but I have no desire to change my major; at least not to please anyone. I do not excel in courses most of my associates do, such as writing, mathematics, English, and etc. I certainly find no interest in them so I feel the motivation is already lost in that department. My weaknesses will only

I didn't realize that playing and teaching these young adolescent minds would soon be the major I would be studying. I’ve chosen lots of areas to study throughout high school, but I’ve always kept changing my mind. For example, I’ve gone from wanting to be a marine biologist all the way from wanting to be an entrepreneur. I never could figure out what my heart…

Choosing a career is not always based on what someone is greatly passionate about. It can be about the pay rate, the hours or even the environment. Gordon Marino author of "A Life Beyond Do What You Love", published in 2014 in the New York Times, believes that people should not only do what they love but perform something that can benefit society or their families. Mariano is a professor of philosophy, a student advisor and a community volunteer. He began to realize that when advising students, he would always tell them to do what they love even though in reality they did not know what they loved to do.…

I read Arnett’s unconventional path to becoming who he is in the present time, a developmental psychologist. Throughout “Confessions of a Heretic,” Arnett takes the reader through his career journey and the multiple jobs that he held throughout the years until he finally arrived at his current destination, a job he believes to be fulfilling. For this reason, I believe that by taking us through his professional journey, he describes a career with a heart. As I read this article, I also, reflected on myself and how this can be applied to my career trajectory over time.…

Murray believes that it may also be a waste of their money if they are just going for the LIB art major which may lead them nowhere and leave them with nothing but loans. Although Murray does make a good argument that four-year college may not be for everyone, I disagree with him, saying that vocational school would be a better option and that not everyone is qualified, therefore I do think that everyone that whoever chooses to attend college is able to and should attend. For instance, a four-year college may be for someone who has a clear vision of what they want to be in life. However, like Murray said, “some large proportion of students on today’s campuses -- probably a majority of them -- are looking for something that the four-year college may not provide” ( Murray 2). He believes that four-year colleges try to do too much, a more practical option would be vocational schools.…

Education Majors Teachers have the ability to educate, challenge, and expand the minds of children who will shape and refine the world’s future. They inspire students to become scientists who may discover a cure for cancer, doctors that will save lives, or athletes who will break records. Children depend on teachers to provide them with every opportunity to become great, which is why earning a teaching certificate should not be an easy process. Today, one has to pass the Praxis test, obtain a 3.0 GPA, and complete the assigned college courses to earn a teaching certificate. Due to these simple requirements, unqualified college graduates are becoming ineffective teachers that are failing to assist their students in the right direction.…

Many students have unique incentives for choosing their major while others are rather straight forward. I believe mine is a combination of the two. Ever since I was young, I demonstrated an interest in the dental field. Teeth were always the very first thing I noticed about a person, including myself. When my adult teeth started to come in, there was so much overcrowding that my canine teeth were growing in my upper gums.…

As my high school career comes to a close, I realized that after 13 years of being asked “What do you want to be when you grow up?” , I still hadn’t answered the question. In 2002, a book called “StrengthsQuest” was released by Donald O. Clifton, Edward “Chip” Anderson, and Laurie A. Schreiner, in hopes it would give college students like me a simple, yet extremely helpful tool to guide them through their college experience. In this book one can find things called Signature Themes. The signature themes are given to readers after they take the “Clifton StrengthsFinder”.…

As any other, typical high school student, I was confused in which career I wanted to go into. I looked for clarity by discussing with guidance counsellors, friends and parents. Originally, my mom tried to encourage me in becoming a French teacher (to use my abilities to speak fluent French to my advantage) but I never really saw myself doing that for the rest of my life. Sadly, nobody really seemed to have any helpful advice other than "what are your interests?" Honestly, I was not really sure.…

I’ve always had a wide range of interests, but I’ve never really had any one central field that I knew, for a fact, I wanted to pursue. I can always see myself in numerous occupations, but can never fully pinpoint one with complete satisfaction. For the longest time, I wanted to be an orthodontist, and at any certain time in my life I’ve wanted to be a pharmacist, or a criminologist, a museum curator, maybe a psychiatrist, the list goes on. The closer I’ve gotten to entering college, the more I get asked the question of career choice. With such a broad and unique set of courses and majors offered, I know that at the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts I can take the time to experiment with different fields and finally find the…

Personal Statement At the age of five, I had fallen in love with reading when I started learning the Arabic alphabet. I recently read a memorable bit of data that emphasizes the importance of working in a career that provides purpose and satisfaction; between the ages of 20 and 65, an average individual, working a forty-hour work week with two weeks vacation per year, will devote over 90,000 hours to their profession. My decision to apply to the Master of Arts program in Industrial/Organizational Psychology is a result of my personal mission to find a career path that engages my interests, employs my skills and talents and provides a sense of satisfaction for 90,000 hours or more. In the spring of 2013, I graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with a Bachelor of Science degree in Information Science. Shortly thereafter, I began working for Teachers Insurance Annuity…
