Brian’s winter is a book about a boy who is stranded in the wilderness. Brian Robeson is the main character but there are other minor characters like , the animals, brian's mother, the pilot, David Smallhorn, and the Smallhorn children. The whole book takes place in the canadian wilderness near a small lake. The themes of the book are survival and loneliness. Brian Robeson was on his way to see his parents when the pilot has a heart attack and loses control of the plane and it crashes in the middle of the canadian wilderness with nothing to survive with other than the things on the plane and the hatchet his mother gave him. The food supply is short due to the fact that not that many things can grow , and a lot of the animals are hibernating at this time. While most animals are hibernating there still are some food supplies such as nuts and animals. The deer was a big role to Brain such as the moose. The deer gave a lot of meat so that brian could survive longer than he would have if he wasn't able to take it down. He used the weapons he had in his positions to kill the deer. His hunting weapons where a gun that he had found in the plane, a bow and arrow he had crafted for himself, a lance he had crafted himself, and a hatchet his mother had gave him., but hunting wasn't the only thing brian used those weapons for. To survive Brian had to defend himself against predators who were trying to kill him and take his food such as the bear, moose and wolves. The moose was one of the many animals to attack Brian and for Brian to defend himself he weakened it with the bow and arrow and he finished the moose off with the lance. He had not come in contact with any humans since the plane crash and even the simplest of people need human contact or it will start to have a toll on the minds. But Brian did make one friend the whole time he was stranded in the wilderness. A skunk appeared at his camp and demanded for food, but after Brian gave him food the sound didn't leave he decided to stay for a while with Brian and that help Brian feel less alone. It wasn't a person but a companion is a companions. As long as Brian had some company he felt everything was going to be okay. Also the loneliness brian faced was the reason he was able to get out of that miserable place. Brian went out for a hunt and that's when he came upon a village with a small family by the name of The Smallhorns. The father of the Smallhorns was a man named David who help Brian get back
