Simic explains how living in rural areas allowed some boredom to sneak back into life. “At almost any hour of the day, one could hear several radios tuned to different stations at the same time,” Simic said about his time living in a New York apartment. Simic also describes life in rural areas, “Every major storm brings down power lines which were a low priority due to small populations” (Simic 375). The small descriptive anecdotes allow the reader to be flashed back to a time of where mundane days of power outages left the victim with books and board games for entertainment.
