When the whole book is taking place is during the span of fifteen years during the Lithuanian Holocaust. The first setting is at Lina’s house in Lithuania. Lithuania is where they are for a couple chapters. The second setting is in the train. They describe the train as a musty, old, prison on wheels. The third setting is in a village in Russia. They take her and her family, except Papa, who was captured while working. They are thrown on to a train where Lina meets Andrius. On her journey she meets new people. When they approach their first destination, an abandoned village, they are forced to live with other people. They stay there for about three years. They get picked up on a train again and headed to a departure. Everybody thinks they are going to America. Turns out they go to Siberia. They work there for twelve more years.
