Jennifer 8. Lee was on a quest to find out how authentic American Chinese food is. In her book, The Fortune Cookie Chronicles, she uses multiple themes to illustrate her findings and her research, such as diversity, food, race and history, but I think her book is mostly about the culture aspect of American-Chinese and Chinese people. I think the author’s purpose of writing was to inform people about the American-Chinese food and its origins. I also think she wanted to inform people about the differences between American-Chinese food and pure Chinese food.…

The Bertuli Story It is known that passing stories down from one family member to another keeps the memories alive. The same can be said for those who have served in our military. Getting personal information from someone who has experienced that part of life can be so important in keeping those memories, both good and not-so-good alive. In interviewing Mr. Leonard Bertuli, a United States Marine from Mark, IL, my partner Seth Carlson and I learned more about his life before entering military, his experiences while in the military, specifically during those taking place during the Vietnam war.…

The memoirs of two Renaissance men: Buoanccorso Pitti and Gregorio Dati. Highlight some of the lifestyles of the time. Pitti was clearly the wealthier and political of the two, being involved in wars, diplomacy, and politics. Pitti took his business as more of a side job to his political involvements in France. Compared to his counterpart in the book, Pitti travels considerably more, spending more time outside of Florence as he travels to meet emperors, kings, and nobles.…

I feel there is quite a bit of truth to Bambrick-Santoyo’s comparison of coaching teacher leaders to Stone Soup. On our campus we have four members who make up our Instructional Leadership Team (ILT). ILT consists of our principal, assistant principal, our Language Arts instructional coach, and myself. Even with the four of us coaching teachers, it is still difficult to provide quality coaching to all of our teachers on campus. Most of our attention goes to our teachers who are “on fire” and, as a result, our other teachers are provided little coaching.…

In the middle of discussion participants were asked to share their opinions about Laudato Si and if they would add or change in it. Based on their previously expressed views about this document, I agree that it is very important for all people. I join my opinion with Erin Lothes Biviano, who explained that Earth is our sister that has been exploited in order to receive materials goods. We should see each other as brothers and sisters, biblically speaking like Kane and Able, who takes care of one another, with that including our neighbors and those who are in need of help, like the poor. Here it is argued, that one should be like Jesus who cared for creation, who one with those in struggle.…

The play, Much Ado About Nothing, by William Shakespeare is a romantic comedy set in Messina that focuses on two relationships throughout the play, Beatrice and Benedick and Claudio and Hero. Beatrice and Benedick are constantly arguing because of how similar their personalities are. They have a strong relationship because of how well they know each other. Claudio and Hero have a ‘fairytale’ kind of love because they do not know each other very well and do not argue until the day of their wedding. Benedick and Beatrice represent a realistic relationship where, Claudio and Hero represent a much simpler one.…

The Adventures of Ibn Battuta follow the travels of Ibn Battuta from Morocco through much of Africa, Arabia, Anatolia, Central and Southeast Asia, India, and China as he searches for an Islamic judicial position. Based on his accounts in the Rihla, each city he goes to and each person he meets is highlighted in the book. I think that Ross Dunn’s goal is to give a clear picture of the Islamic world through Ibn Battuta’s journey. I agree with almost everything of what Danny Yee says in his book review. He starts by saying that the book “follows Ibn Battuta's travels chronologically, but doesn't stay narrowly focused on the details of his career.”…

In the book Bel Canto by Ann Patchett, one of the characters who contributed to the story is Carmen. Carmen was a seventeen year old terrorist who was part of the organization responsible for keeping the hostages trapped in the vice president’s house. Carmen’s character is complex from the beginning of the story as she was considered to be a boy in the beginning of the days the hostage situation was happening. Carmen’s relevancy in the story is important because results from the end of the story stem specifically from her and her relationships she formed with the hostages around her. Despite her shy nature and being a teenager, Carmen had an impact on the story and was a key character who was close to a myriad of hostages.…

Ben Pollizi Mrs. Kimmich English 10 Advanced 15 April 2017 Sacco and Vanzetti Shortly after World War 1, the United States was soon gripped with a massive fear of communists, foreigners, and anything that wasn’t American. This fear was taken out on anyone who was in America that wasn’t American. One key example of this was the lives of Sacco and Vanzetti. These two men moved to America before World War 1 had begun. Due to the fact that Sacco and Vanzetti were both Italian immigrants, and were convicted of their crime during a time of massive hatred toward foreigners, the justice system disregarded all the reasonable doubt in their case and declared them guilty.…

Philippe Bourgois is an Anthropologist who, through extensive long-term participant observation, throws himself into the underbelly of contemporary American society. The dark, disturbing themes within his reality filled photo-ethnography, Righteous Dopefiend, attracted a wide audience. In ‘Righteous Dopefiend’ Bourgois and his research assistant Jeff Schonberg followed the lives of 24 homeless heroin injectors and crack smokers in San Francisco over a period of 12 years. The ethnography was written to shed light on the controversial topics of poverty, addiction and homelessness, and to reveal how political and social structures are responsible for such a destructive part of society. Bourgois’ ethnographies boast strong influence of both political-economy and interpretative anthropology.…
