In Valerie Tarico’s article, “Christianity’s own ‘War on Christmas,’” she states that Christianity takes part in a practice called “syncretism.” Syncretism is when local traditions and religions are absorbed into Christianity. In fact, Tarico claims that Pagan temples became churches, indigenous gods became saints and pagan festival days were turned into Christian holy days. To further this idea of syncretism, Tarico goes on to say that the earliest documentation of Christmas comes from the fourth century; it seems to be related with the union of Christianity and Rome.…

Halloween, an American tradition where young children can go ‘trick or treating’ around their neighbourhood, however, this has risen the debate of whether this celebration is a safe or a suitable one to be part of. An opinion piece was published on Mamamia on the 29th of October, 2015, titled ‘Why my kids won’t be doing Halloween’, written by Alissa Warren, implies that Halloween is a ridiculous and an inappropriate event to be participated by anyone. In a disconcerting and exasperated tone, Warren targets readers of Mamamia and parents, of this whole issue of the pointless festivity. The article was also accompanied by a visual image that displays some kids in costume, trick or treating, with no one around and followed by a comment, written…

I don 't believe I have missed a single "Countdown to Christmas" movie this year on the Hallmark Channel nor its sister network Hallmark Movies & Mysteries. While I have my personal favorites, there is no denying that a massive hit this year was their film A Heavenly Christmas starring Eric McCormack, Kristin Davis, and the legendary Shirley MacClaine. My family and I thoroughly enjoyed this film, and when I discovered that Gregg McBride was the screenwriter for this Yuletide treat, I quickly reached out to him for an interview. I was incredibly elated when he responded (and so quickly too). Gregg graciously agreed to answer a few questions about his passion for writing, his personal struggles in his own life, and even a bit about his future…

Modern times offer a very diverse way of expressing oneself. The expression of a single person who consumes more than they need may not be enough to hurt the environment; however, the overproduction of harmful waste from big business is big enough to impact the environment. Critically acclaimed author Anna Lappé describes the climate crisis through the food production industry in a sector of industry where people rarely scrutinize in her article “The Climate Crisis at the End of Our Fork.” In a very different, yet scarily similar way Carolyn Merchant metaphorically describes the problems with modern human tendency and desires through the image of a shopping mall in “Eden Commodified.”…

Stuff Matters is a book by Mark Miodownik where he explores the different origins and properties of materials that are in our daily lives. The materials around us are taken for granted, thus not many people can answer the question of why the materials look, feel, and act the way they do. A prime example is plastic. Polymers, or plastics, are considered one of the six classes of materials that has changed the world.
