Anna, a teenage girl, Oma, Anna’s grandmother, and her mom, known as “Mother” throughout the book, are taken from their home in Mannheim, Germany because of their Jewish ethnicity. They are then forced to get on a train, not knowing when or where they’ll stop, and Oma is growing old and sick due to old age and mal-nourishment. Fortunately they end up in a French camp rather than a German camp called Gurs and Oma survived the long train ride. Anna is roomed with a professional violinist, Sonia Morenthal, and coincidently one of her best friends from her home town, Kara. Oma passed away a couple of months after arriving and Anna is debating the existence of goodness in the world. This where my drawing starts to come into play. Anna remembers
