The McBride family was new to the jammed packed city life where the air smelled of smoke and pollutants, and anywhere you went, there were tons of people. New York City was going to be Aniah’s fifth home in the past year. She was familiar with California. She’d lived in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Sacramento. For the past couple of months the fourteen year old had been used to the quietness of Utah. Unfortunately, her father couldn’t hold a job and money was tight, so being flexible was the only way to make life seem

Please take these boxes up to your room and come back down when you finish, we have a lot of work to do.” Aniah’s mother kindly demanded, hinting she was panicked. The young girl didn’t own very much; just the first two Harry Potter series novels, eleven unfitting outfits, and a few knickknacks collected through her travels. The fourteen year old grasped onto her two small boxes, and reassured her mother addressing “I will, don’t worry. Love you.” Aniah was eager to see her new room for the first time, but every step she took was followed by a loud creak. It was like every new home she moved into was 50% of the previous; 50% in size, 50% worse, and 50% blander. Aniah pretended not to notice this around her parents, for they always give an empathetic look towards her if they realize she isn’t …show more content…
There was no closet, so Aniah rested her limited clothes into an unaccompanied corner adjacent to the sheetless bed. Checking her watch, Aniah discovered it was six o’clock; she’d be called downstairs for her father’s supper any minute now. A quick decision caused her to jump onto her springy bed and...well...wait. The songs of birds chirping were well missed, all she could hear were cars beeping and people yelling. It wasn’t that big of a deal though, Aniah has always wanted to live in a big city, and her family was lucky to find such an apartment for a good

Jeannette became the woman she is today in spite of her childhood because of the poverty she faced, the lack of a consistent and reliable home, and the two, polar opposite sides of her father. For the first seventeen years of her life, Jeannette lived in a kind of poverty that most people could hardly imagine: no plumbing, dangerous infrastructure in her houses, and rarely any food. Her family was so poor that “[the] kids slept in big cardboard boxes” (52), says Jeannette.. This largely contrasts to the life she lived even when she first arrived in New York. In New York, Jeannette worked…

In “Average Waves in Unprotected Waters” by Anne Tyler, the two main settings, Bet’s apartment and the hospital, while different in atmosphere, have surprisingly similar effects. These two settings both represent the inadequacy Bet feels, like all parents, about making decisions for their children. Bet’s apartment is where this story first starts. However, this apartment is not truly a home and does not provide Arnold, her autistic son, and her with the warmth, comfort, and support that is necessary. Bet must do her dishes in the bathroom sink, as there is no real kitchen, and most of the house is decaying, as shown by the “yellowed shade” and “layers of brownish wallpaper her child had peeled away.”…

The events in Ezra happened from 538 to 457 B.C., with about a sixty year gap in the middle (during which Esther takes place). From 444 to 425 B.C., Nehemiah worked to rebuild the walls and realign the hearts of the people of Jerusalem.…
