Summary Of 'A Separate Peace'

Improved Essays
On the tree limb with his friend, Gene acts recklessly and instinctively, and expresses his anger on Finny on his understanding of Finny never once being jealous of him. Unconsciously, Gene is found jouncing the limb, causing Finny to fall. The physical tension holding Gene captive suddenly frees him, and for the first time without fear, Gene jumps from the tree. While doing this, Gene’s perspective of himself and the world is restored; his childish ways of thinking are recreated into his mind. In the same sense, when describing his actions on the limb, he insists that it wasn't his fault, but his knees were to blame. After several times, again, Gene finds comfort in resorting and taking shelter in a childish and self-centered defense.

Personal or political wars may result ignorance in the human heart and result in inability to understand self and others. Furthermore, realities of life permeate and threaten peace in the world of youth as seen in the Devon School in A Separate Peace. War can hold strange parallels to sport as also in the Winter Carnival, and the atmosphere created can prevail in a time of war, along with the emotions, conflicts, and jealousy that can result…

Finny, though, remains unaware of his friend's true feelings and proposes that they climb the tree again and make the jump together. He means this double jump as a ritual act of friendship — a way of sealing the bond of their "partnership." What happens next, on the limb before the boys jump, foreshadows the central dramatic event of the novel (in Chapter 4). Suddenly, Gene loses his balance — physically, of course, but symbolically, too — and Finny instinctively grasps his friend's hand to balance him and save him from…
