In Winter’s Bone, by Daniel Woodrell describes Ree of having “cheeks reddening as if smacked and smacked again”. He uses these words to describe her because, it foreshadows her struggles throughout the book. Reddening cheeks symbolize the obstacles Ree accepted to face. The readers fall in love with her character by reading about her experiences and seeing mentally how she keeps her strength throughout the book. On the other hand though, the readers are worried about her breaking rules and her getting in trouble. People may argue Ree isn’t role model material, but if she didn’t break the rules she probably would have never found her father. Other’s say she demonstrates role model material because of the obstacles she went through. Woodrell chose for Ree to be a young age for the readers to really connect with her. Connecting with a young main character helps the readers go through the hardships Ree faced mentally. Role models are really important in life because those people that are, help shape the people’s identity. People tend to try and be role models for others, they try to relate those characteristics in their lives. For example, parents try to be role models to their kids so they can grow up, the way the parents want them to. On the other hand Ree didn’t have her mom be her role model, her mom was the opposite.
