A Raisin in the sun by Lorraine Hansberry is a realistic fiction in which the play 's title and characters Represent the play 's theme. The play focused on black America’s struggle to reach the American dream of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness during the 50’s and the 60’s. The idea of everyone having a the chance to achieve a better life should exist for all. Lena’s dream was for her kids to reach their dreams. She was going to achieve this dream by Putting a down payment on a new house. Her dream was deferred when Walter invested all the money that Lena had spared. Half of that money was supposed to go to Walters investment towards the liquor store. The other half was supposed to go into a bank to Beneatha 's college fund. But Walters business partner willy took all the money and ran off with it. When informed by bobo, Walter broke down in tears of what had happened. Lena so disappointed, she even put her hands on Walter. Slapping him repeatedly on his back, Walter lied about going to the bank. “ Yessss All of it…. it all gone” (129). Lena”s dream of Walter remembering his father 's legacy was also deferred. To finally get what he’s always wanted. To have a liquor store and earning good money. Lena is a woman who just trying to keep her family together. But the issue of money keeps getting in the way. Everyone is getting stressed over what will the money be used for. They never had that much money. It overwhelmed them. Beneatha tries to show people that she’s a strong independent woman. Also telling people that they 're being assimilated, or that what people are doing is caused by assimilation. She also is in a love triangle between George, who trying to make her understand the simpler things. Also that everyone is not just going to go along with what she says or do just cause she says it 's right. Asagia tries to make her more free and embrace her heritage, but do it in a better manner.
