County: Life, Death and Politics at Chicago’s Public Hospital by a Chicago based physician and health activist David A. Ansell is a very inspirational book because it covers 30 years of Cook County Hospital’s history, beginning in the late 1970s till 2002. Cook County Hospital is an urban public hospital in Chicago that admits patients who are uninsured. Time, space, communication, and identity are portrayed throughout the book. These four factors are important in inter-ethnic relationships between patients and health care providers. Being able to identify these factors in a clinical setting, health care providers can provide more efficient care for all patients.…
The main aim of this paper is to assess on how HealthStar is providing ARMHS to individuals with mental illness. The mental health department at HealthStar is responsible in providing ARMHS services. The department currently has a director of mental health service, an ARMHS/CTSS treatment director, four mental health Practitioners and three masters level social work intern students and a part-time LICSW supervisor. ARMHS program provides one-on-one services to adults with a diagnosable mental illness who are experiencing difficulties in their daily functioning.…
Because, of the strength of the program, its proximity, and its flexibility to the target audience, it is reasonable to believe that the program will improve the well-being and short-term performance while mitigating any negative long-term mental health problems for both CAF personnel and their families. Moreover, considering that findings from 2002 indicated that 84% to 96% of CAF personnel that met criteria for a mental disorder, did not use services stated that they did not need services, I think the program will contribute to help CAF personnel recognize distress and seek support when required (Bailey, 2015). However, the success of the program is related to this actual context, perhaps, if the organizational culture change to the point that CAF personnel master their mental health continuum, the requirement for such education will become irrelevant. Therefore, it would be important to evaluate the context at the same time of evaluating the program outcomes (Posavac,…
The programs that support mental health include children’s mental health, mental health crisis services, family intervention, transitional age services, mobile mental health groups, rural mental health, emergency crisis homes, and step down houses in conjunction with the crisis homes. On another end of the services, Turning Point supports programs for drug intervention, drug rehab/recovery centers, prison reentry centers,…
In September 2010, Bell Let’s Talk day started a new conversation about Canada’s mental health. At that time, most people weren't talking about mental illness, this was the case because people didn’t see mental illness as a big problem. But numbers spoke for the need of action. Millions of Canadians across Canada wanted to offer help to people who suffer from Mental illness. At the end, institutions and organizations both large and small had access to donate and help this problem.…
While it could be considered commonplace to suggest that all individuals deserve personalized care to meet their ever-changing needs that is not the reality in Canada. I believe that this is the future of social work across the lifespan: meeting the needs of individuals at every stage of life and help support individuals and families in the transitions as they occur through collaboration, information sharing support in various circumstances, and pursuing transformative ideologies in every aspect of what we do (McNeil, 2013). For this assignment, I have chosen to develop a service plan for Paul Monroe, a 32 year old man diagnosed with schizophrenia. In my analysis, I will be assessing his needs through a Bio-psychosocial Assessment, developing…
The field of evaluation has grown and continues to develop into a field of many facets. Several aspects of the field are easily divisible into three categories: Values, Methods and Use. Of the three categories, the valuing branch places great focus on an evaluators ability to place value on their findings while also selecting which outcomes to further examine. Much like the evaluation process, the Urban Options Projects incorporates a level of importance for value. Not only does the program seek to improve the level of assistance to youth within the Lafayette County community, the program seeks to conduct an external evaluation to ensure that the comprehensive program is impacting the lives of students around.…
A smooth discharge to community requires close cooperation among individuals with mental health/psychiatric problems, their families, and community-based agencies. When effectively done, the transition can result in continuity of care. (Hann, Hoppins, & MacGregor,…
In class we were asked to read and summarize three blog posts on the Advances in the history of Psychology’s website. I decided to read and summarize the following blog entries: “After the Asylum/Après l’asile”, “Starved, tortured, forgotten: Genie, the feral child who left a mark on researchers”, and “APA out of Guantánamo.” The post “After the asylum discusses one of the biggest changes in our society regarding mental health and institutes during the late 20th century in Canada. The blog splits the discussion into four parts regarding: Policy and practice, peer support and activism, community initiatives, and early de-institutionalisation cases.…
Once a family is looking into emergency assistance, the Home Base Program will investigate their claim and determine eligibility for shelter placement. If the family is eligible for other housing options, they will not get placed into one of their shelters immediately, as they are not priority at the time. A key point to emphasize to families is that entering a shelter does not guarantee them a stable apartment. They must still do their part to continue searching for a permanent home, and stable income. Subsidy programs in the city are available and families can remain in shelters for a long period of time.…
Mental illness is a largely stigmatized topic and it leads most patients to fear treatment options and seeking care. Often times, the relatively unprepared communities are not supportive of these patients and make them feel more out of place. A lack of community support causes relapse and therefore, readmission to hospitals (Yearwood, 2008). Another weakness comes from the fact that, often times, patients in these facilities are unable to care for themselves. This means they rely heavily on local centers, or support systems.…
Deinstitutionalization is not new, nor has it proved to be an adequate solution for chronically-ill mental health clients. As early as the 1970’s, reforms were needed to address how community mental health centers managed the chronically-ill. It was believed that institutionalization was the contributing factor to chronic mental illness and that the burden could be easily remedied by community health centers. The complexities of the issues were not vetted appropriately. Social welfare and housing needs were not accounted for and posed significant concerns.…
It is essential that adequate care and rehabilitation be provided and made more easily accessible in the community to ensure the health and safety of the mentally ill…
Mental health issues are a growing concern in society today due to the increase numbers of mental illness in society (Statistics Canada, 2016). With the increasing numbers in mental health concerns there is a rise in the need for community supports such as counseling centers, therapy, and health care professionals such as social workers. “There has been an increase of perceived poor mental health in men and women from 2011 to 2014. In Canada the increase is from 5.6% in 2011 to 6.3% in 2014” (Statistics Canada, 2016). With the increase of mental health issues, it is of paramount importance for social work practitioners to understand the theoretical framework they intend to use in their practice.…
